You can now continue using video checks for job applicants until the 5th April 2022. This means you do not have to see a passport or biometric residence card in person, you can view it online by taking the following steps.
- ask the worker to submit a scanned copy or a photo of their original documents via email or using a mobile app
- arrange a video call with the worker – ask them to hold up the original documents to the camera and check them against the digital copy of the documents, record the date you made the check and mark it as “adjusted check undertaken on [insert date] due to COVID-19”
Remember if the employee has a current Biometric Residence Card or has been granted status under the EU Settlement Scheme or the points-based immigration system you can ask them to download a share code using the following link – Prove your right to work to an employer – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
They will then be able to give you a share code that you input into the following website – online right to work checking service and this will give you a document you can download and save as proof of the individuals right to work. This document has a photograph and you will still need to see the employee either in person or via a video link, to check the likeness.
